LEEDS – HAWORTH ROYAL SCOT 46100 “THE THAMES CLYDE EXPRESS”
Tuesday 26 June 2018
Our journey started in Leeds City Station with Eddie, Colin, Derek, Keith and Malcolm boarding the 09:54 to Keighley arriving at Keighley at 10:21. Then a short walk to the bus station in Keighley to meet up with the “Tourmeister” John for the 10:45 bus to Haworth arriving at 11:00 on the dot. We crossed the road and into the Station to wait for our 11:25 train whilst John had a dialogue with the ticket office. The train which we had reserved seven seats in Coach “C” No’s 49 – 55 arrived a little after 11:30 and we boarded the train after being given the nod by a station marshal.
The train was running slightly late due to a number of reasons one of the most serious was a blaze that had been started by a spark from a locomotive that was also on the line. We travelled up to Oakworth for a photo shoot and we then clambered aboard for a trip back into Keighley where more photographs were taken and a few of the lads treated themselves to a hotdog or a burger. However, I resisted this temptation as I didn’t want it to spoil my dinner at “The Old White Lion Hotel” which was our scheduled dining delight?
On returning to the train two interlopers had taken two of our seats and explained that someone had taken their seats and a railway official had told them they could sit anywhere, Malcolm soon sorted this out by explaining that these seats were reserved and they had no right to be sitting in them and to go back and tell the people sitting in their seats to move. They reluctantly sloped of after wishing us a good afternoon in an extremely sarcastic and rude manner. We noticed as the train took us back to Haworth that the interlopers after trying various other seats and receiving short shrift eventually found their way back onto the platform on Keighley Station making it look highly likely that they never had tickets in the first instance, cheeky beggars.
On arriving back at Haworth we alighted the train crossed over the bridge taking in the last few minutes on the bridge to say goodbye to the train before it set off to Oakworth. We all climbed the cobbled road beyond the bridge until we reached the Park on our left which was beautiful and the path took us directly to the bottom of Haworth Main Street after crossing over the road which took us up to the very top where we had intended to take lunch at “The Old White Lion Hotel” but it was now getting late and on our arrival we were told that it stopped serving at 14:30 and now it was 14:31 so we had to find an alternative which we did just back down the Main Street where we had pie and mushy peas with a variety of pies and drinks to slake our thirsts.
We then returned back up Main Street to Mrs Beighton’s to get an ice cream cornet, once again a lovely choice of flavours and delightful to eat in this hot humid climate of ours. It was now time to return to Haworth Station for the 16:00 back to Keighley for our train back to Leeds. Unfortunately, the train was running approximately an hour late so we caught the bus back to Keighley bus station which fortuitously arrived as soon as we got to the bus stop which was close by Haworth Station. On our arrival at Keighley Bus Station we said goodbye to John and thanked him for organising a wonderful day out. John was catching his bus back home from here but we had a five-minute walk back to Keighley Station for our train to Leeds with Derek and Eddie returning to Dewsbury and Woodlesford respectively.
Another sunshine filled extravaganza and the only sad thing was that Dave was not able to be with us because of other commitments,
