Grandpa Greene
11th. September 2018. Walk to Grandpa Greene’s
Today’s adventure wouldn’t take the Lads too far, in fact it was just a short train journey West
to the village of Greenfield, which is situated on the outskirts of Oldham, Lancashire.
Our group will consist of Eddie, Keith, John, Derek, Dave and Colin, Malcolm has other commitments. We should all meet up on the 9:53 train heading from Leeds towards Manchester Piccadilly, stopping at various stations on its way, namely Morley and Dewsbury .After passing through the Standedge tunnel we arrived at Greenfield Station some 40 minutes later. From here it was only a few hundred yards to the steps which lead us to the canal side footpath, to our delight this pathway was not too muddy considering the amount of overnight rain in this particular area.
We were soon into our stride as we headed back east following the coarse of the Huddersfield Narrow Cutt Canal which would eventually take us to the location of Grandpa Greene’s Ice cream parlour, plenty of locks to pass on this part of our journey as it is steady uphill climb towards the infamous Standedge Tunnel, although we are not going that far this time.
As we walk along we pass quite a few other fellow walkers ,each doing their own thing, some exercising their dogs , some pushing along their babies who were snuggling in their pushchairs and others just out enjoying themselves, we pass a number of anglers trying out their luck and several Canal workers carrying out inspection work on this particular stretch of the waterway. We also came across a group of young people engaged in a Duke of Edinburgh award challenge, good luck to them.
We eventually reached our intended destination some few minutes after 12:30 , after a lengthy look at the menu we each ordered our meal. We now seated ourselves in a comfortable place and awaited their appearance, this took several minutes or so, Derek had to wait a little while longer for some reason. Anyhow we all enjoyed our lunch, then after a short discussion about our next intended outing, we decided to sit outside and partake of a ice cream treat with the sun on our faces.
Soon it was time to start our return journey back towards Greenfield Station, this was a leisurely walk
Chatting and having a laugh as we went along admiring the countryside and great views in this particular location.
As some of our group had not had the privilege of visiting the village of Upper Mill , we left the canal bank and joined the road taking us along the high street of this lovely location ,enabling them to admire its charms etc.
Now it was back to the canal to finish our walk and with time to spare we decided to visit the newly opened Station Brew Cafe just across the road from the Railway Station here at Greenfield, drinks enjoyed it was over the road now and make our way to the platform in order to catch the 15:36 train back towards home.
Yet another great day out with the Lads
Cheers.
