Kelham Island Museum
22nd. November 2018. Kelham Island Museum
Today’s adventure would take the Lads to the city of Sheffield, south of the boarder here in Yorkshire.
We have made plans to meet up on the Leeds to Sheffield train that was due to depart Leeds at 9:38
The group will consist of 6 members those being Colin, Eddie, Malcolm, John , Derek and Dave will join the train at Wakefield a few minutes before 10: am. The train was rather crowded after leaving Barnsley many of the passengers heading to Meadowhall shopping centre on the outskirts of Sheffield.
As 10:30 approached our train pulled into Sheffield City Station, from here it was less than a hundred yards to the Tram stop where we were able to take the blue Tram to our destination of Kelham Island.
This short journey took us via the City centre on past the Cathedral and the university and children’s hospital before reaching Shalesmoor and the area of Kelham Island. A very friendly chat on the Tram lead to a number of photos being taken by this particular couple of passengers.
Off the Tram and across the busy road junctions we now headed in the direction of the Industrial Museum, the Lads noticing a lot more redevelopment in this particular area to say the least.
Before not too long we were at the entrance to the Museum, but before entering we decided to have a refreshments break here at the nearby cafe. While here we took a look at what was on offer for lunch
and after a short discussion decided we would take lunch here instead of trying another venue.
Upon entry to the Museum the assistant told us that it was close to 12 o’clock and that the very large steam driven engine was about to start up.
This is an amazing piece of engineering which was built here in the city of Sheffield some hundred and fifty years ago , one of only four to be constructed specially designed for heavy steel plate rolling engaged in the production of armour plating for the Navy’s Battleships .The display of this machines capabilities lasted for about 15 minutes, from here it was on to discover what other fascinating items were on view here at Kelham. The lads were not going to be disappointed at all, such a magnificent array of engineering artefacts on display.
As previously discussed we took lunch here at the on site cafe and to be honest it was well under par considering what we had paid, only the soup getting our approval. A short while later and we were back enjoying more intriguing things about the steel industry here in Sheffield and about the part it played in the revolution of the tool industry etc.
As the time drifted on and our visit was almost at its
end here at Kelham it was time to say farewell has we headed for the Tram and the journey back towards the Railway Station here in Sheffield. As 16:45 approached we all boarded the train taking us back to our respective homes.
Yet another great day out with the Lads
Very pleased this was an indoors adventure, for the weather was rather terrible today
Only scoring point 025 out of 10.
Anyway Cheers Lads.
