Dewsbury to Calder Island
8th. November 2018 Dewsbury to Calder Island
Today’s adventure was a welcome home gesture for Dave, he’s been Holidaying out in Spain.
The lads let him take care of the arrangements for today’s outing .
He decided upon a canal side walk which would take the Lads from Dewsbury to the outskirts of Wakefield at a location known as Calder Island, a distance of some 6 miles or so.
The arrangements were for the Lads to all meet up at the railway station in Dewsbury around about
10:00 am. The group consistered of Colin, Malcolm, Eddie, John and Dave the other members having prior arrangements.
Due to train problems, John had a rather lengthy delay to face, so modern technology stepped in and we were able to rearrange things, 11:07 was the new meeting up time. John apologising for his misfortune. Apology accepted we now began our journey a 20 minutes walk through the streets of Dewsbury to join the Calder and Hebble navigation at a point named Saviletown Marina, from here it was a steady walk along the tow path heading in the direction of Horbury Bridge, just about the halfway point on our journey. Once we reached this location we decided to take a coffee break at a suggested local cafe, Connie’s Truck Stop.
After a 30 minutes rest we resumed our journey, the time was now approaching 1:45 .
with still a few more miles to cover before lunch could be enjoyed. It would be a late lunch.
Not many people venturing out today , even although it was quite pleasant for an autumn day ,just a handful to say hello to, mostly fisherman and the odd dog walker.
50 minutes later and the sound of traffic could be heard, this was from the M1 motorway, we did eventually pass under this on the last stages of our journey before reaching Calder Island area and our lunch venue at the Toby Carvery.
Time to reflect on our journey, all agreed it was a pleasant walk through lovely countryside and a distance that wasn’t too taxing made all the more pleasing with a delicious meal.
Taxi booked we said farewell to each other as we headed towards home.
Cheers Lads
Another great day.
