Slaithwaite to Standedge
28th. February 2019. Slaithwaite to Standedge Tunnel
For their outing today the lads are heading for the western reaches of West Yorkshire, to the village of Slaithwaite which nestles in the Colne Valley. Their target is to walk along the canal towpath heading
for Marsden a distance of about 3 miles, then continue to the beginning of the Standedge Tunnel an extra 10 minutes walk away. Today’s crew will amount to five , John Colin Keith Derek and Dave
The other lads having prior arrangements.
The adventure starts as usual at Leeds Railway Station where some of them will board the 10:40 train
bound for Huddersfield, the rest will join at different locations. Once all gathered at Huddersfield they will take the 11:28 train heading for Slaithwaite just a short distance along the tracks.
On arrival a short downhill walk will take the lads from the Station to the canal and the beginning of their journey , but first stop is a bite to eat for some members, this was achieved by calling at a recommended butchers shop to sample their pork pies. These consumed we where on our way at a
steady pace along the road that took us to the canal
Almost mid day now as that nearby church clock bell was ringing out its tune, a big change in the weather today as brought about some considerable temperature variation , the last few days as seen some record levels reached especially for the month of February 20 plus in some regions, however today they are hovering around the 10 or 11 degree mark.
Our journey continues as we pass lock after lock on this particular stretch of the Huddersfield Narrow Canal the height reach at this point is some 645 feet above sea level. We eventually reached the Standedge Tunnel visitors centre just after 1:30 only to find that for some building work project it had been forced to close for the day , pity.
A kind gentleman suggested we return to Marsden and give the Riverhead Brewery Tap pub a try, comes highly recommend he says. This is what the lads did and by 2:45 they had enjoyed a great lunch time meal and a chance to discuss future arrangements. From this establishment on Peel Street here in Marsden it was now over the road to enjoy the delights of The Month of Sundaes ice cream parlour , what a treat we had here.
Now as the time was almost 3:20 it was time to say farewell to this particular part of West Yorkshire and head back towards the railway station and the start of our journeys home via Huddersfield on the 15:48 train.
Another great days Adventure
Cheers Lads.
