The Wondering Walk

Thursday 21st. November 2019.        The Wondering Walk

Today’s adventure would see the Lads take a trip to Woodlesford, then from the railway station head for the St. Aidan’s RSPB Nature Reserve . This journey would take them along the footpath by the side of the Aire and Calder navigation then over the rather noisy weir that leads to the river Aire.
then onto the extensive wetlands area of St. Aidan’s.
The Lads intend to meet at the Railway Station in Woodlesford at a few minutes after 11 o’clock
Colin and John have come by train from Leeds, Derek and Dave traveled by bus from Wakefield, Keith and Alan made their way by separate cars.

Alan had arrived first followed by Derek and Dave then Keith and finally Colin and John , Alan had a nice surprise for us all, he had brought along some of Eddies favourite pork pies , enough for all and more besides, well appreciated gesture.
We soon found ourselves down by the waterside and walking along the sometimes rather  muddy pathway , could have been much worse considering the amount of rain we have experienced recently in this area of Yorkshire.

A few of the lads have had previous visits to this region so it was up to them to guide us along so to speak!.We eventually reached the safety of the visitors centre some few minutes short of two hours walking , time now for a well deserved cuppa and a bite to eat whilst resting our legs.

Brief conversation about this and that took place before we eventually began our return journey, not before taking a few photos of the monstrous dragline machine that is a permanent fixture here at the visitors centre, a relic from past endeavours, ie, opencast mining.

The return journey!

Our return journey took us around the so called perimeter footpath, but somehow we took a wrong decision along our way and ended up taking a rather extended detour, not a pleasing result for us all to have endure , so with rather wearisome legs we did eventually arrive back at Woodlesford railway station about an hour later than expected. From here we took our respective modes of transport back to our homes.
A total distance of about 9 miles covered In some times rather muddy and wet conditions but well worth the experience .
Cheers Lads
