Appletreewick to Grassington
20th. September 2017.
Today the lads have decided to take a walk from Appletreewick alongside the river Wharf
and head for the village of Grassington a distance of some 6 miles or so!
On this occasion we are a group of just 4, Colin Derek John and Dave. So off we set heading north to the Yorkshire Dales, 3 of us aboard the 9:32 Leeds to Ilkley train , this is where we will meet up with John in order to catch the number 74A bus from Ilkley to Grassington, this is a very limited service, hence the Wednesday outing and only 3 scheduled trips. As we join the queue and wait for the bus to arrive others in this queue begin doing a head count! the reason for this, only 16 passengers allowed on this bus. No standing allowed.Luckily our group should make it.
Unfortunately we had to leave some intended passengers behind here in Ilkley. Rules are rules said the bus driver, but surely there was 1 seat spare,

No he said that's for me , we have a new recruit today and it's her maiden trip!
So off we drove with Bronwyn at the wheel and a great job she made off this, as she managed to manoeuvre the bus along the narrow winding roads up here in the dales.
We soon reached our drop off point ,the village of Appletreewick, now our walking begins.
A leisurely stroll along the roadway at first on to the next village that of Burnsall ,admiring the wonderful countryside and riverside camping sites as we walk along.
Some 50 minutes later we reach the road bridge that spans the river at this point , it's 5 arch stone construction suitable for one way traffic only, so care had to be taken whilst crossing over this bridge.
Once over the bridge we now join the riverside pathway which will eventually lead us to Grassington. At this stage we encounter various other groups of walkers heading towards us ,each wishing us good day along with other pleasantries. The river at this point runs deep and clear, later on it becomes more vigorous as it cascades through the rocky terrain and adds a touch of excitement to our journey.
So much so that it invites two of our members to attempt to cross by means of the stepping stones provided by some kind person long ago.
With baited breath for some and foolhardiness of the others a successful crossing is achieved and a reunion is made some moments later at the Church near the village of Linton.
From here it is just a short distance along the pathway that takes us up to Grassington and a well deserved lunch.
This was enjoyed courtesy of the Corner House Cafe situated in the heart of the village.
Lunch consumed, it's a brief look around this part of the village before making our way to the bus terminal in order to catch a bus heading for Skipton. It's not too long before the bus arrives and once again we are driving along narrow country lanes and great views of our wonderful surroundings as we make a rather lengthy journey to the town of Skipton. On arrival at the bus station here it's a hurried exit from the bus in order to catch another bus bound for Keighley, this achieved we relax into yet another long bus ride as we wind our way to another Yorkshire Town.
By the time we reach Keighley the rain as began to fall, so it's a quick farewell to John and a swift walk to the railway station for the rest of the Lads to take a train back towards Leeds and home.
Another fascinating trip full of excitement and adventure.
Cheers Lads yet again.
