Howgill to Addingham
27th September 2017
Well it's back to the riverside pathway again, we find ourselves in the Yorkshire Dales for another
adventure. This time we are walking down stream from Howgill past Bolton Abbey and onto Addingham . Today our group consists of Eddie Colin Malcolm Keith Dave and John.
Our meeting point is Ilkley, Time about 10:00 am. This is in order to join the queue for the limited seat availability on the No. 74 bus, only 16 passengers allowed. Never the less we are all gathered there in Ilkley and are soon heading for the Dales, excitement and anticipation gather as we pass various bus stops, eventually the driver says here you are Lads and enjoy your walk. He has dropped us off just a few hundred yards from the riverside at a location close to Howgill.
We soon get our bearings and the adventure begins. The first stretch of this walk is single file along the river bank, then opens up into wide meadows full of different farm animals enjoying the peaceful
grazing here in the Yorkshire Dales. A far cry from the hustle and bustle of the city centres.Great.

On we journey and soon reach our first milestone, Barton Bridge, we take a moment to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy a piece of chocolate, courtesy of Eddie.
It's best foot forward now and on towards the extensive grounds of Bolton Abbey, our walk continues following the river Wharf for another mile or so before we cross over it by means of a rather splendid stone constructed bridge, that once carried a water supply in bye gone days
.Once across the river we now make our way through an extensive wooded area , this part of the walk throws up some interesting features. Mainly that of the Strid ,a deep channel of thundering churning torrent of river water rushing down the gorge, a very dangerous part of this river, warning signs indicate this fact. We spend a brief amount of time at this location before moving onto a more tranquil site, that of Flying Shavings a small area created by a wood carving man who shapes and creates all kinds of stuff for passes by to purchase, unfortunately he was not in attendance today.
Our walk continues a little further and we soon reach The Cavendish Tea Rooms , time for some lite refreshments, but an unexpected delay at the checkout till, lead us to leave as soon as we got there.
Instead we made our purchases at the nearby gift shop much to our advantage.
Now is was on to marvel at the ancient buildings of Bolton Abbey located by the riverside, a few more visitors are in abundance here, enjoying the spectacular views of the countryside.
Onwards onwards go the 6------ just us lads, we leave the grounds of Bolton Abbey behind us and head for uncharted waters so to speak! As we cross over the B6061 road and risk life and limb in order to continue our journey onto Addingham. After a brief mistake we eventually find the path that will lead us to our goal! Some 45 minutes later we arrive in Addingham feeling rather leg weary at this stage.
It's not too long before the No 62 bus comes along and takes us back to Ilkley and the Lister Arms . A Weatherspoons establishment where we enjoyed a well deserved late lunch, some 4 hours plus of walking seams to have taken it out of the Lads. Our meals enjoyed we bid farewell to Ilkley and boarded the trains back home.
Another adventuress day was had by all.
Cheers Lads
