Greenfield and Standedge

GREENFIELD AND STANDEDGE 02 NOVEMBER 2017
The five walkers (Keith, Eddie, John, Malcolm and Colin) all assembled in Leeds City Station waiting for the 09:53 to Huddersfield train whichwas running a little late causing us some concern for our connection train to Wigan at 10:15 but in the end, it all turned out fine making our connection as expected departing Huddersfield on time bound for our destination at travelling through Slaithwaite and Marsden before arriving in Greenfield at 10:36.
Duly arriving at Greenfield we made our way down to the Canal but not before our second in command for this walk had set his MapMyWalk App to measure the exact distance travelled which in the end was just a little over six miles but what a lovely six miles it turned out to be.
Our leader today Keith was given much appreciation for this particular walk that was as near to perfect as one has come to expect on our journeys into the unknown. Surrounded by wonderful hillsides and sunny weather we made our way towards Standedge Tunnel with lots of locks and a few mills from days gone by.
Much to our delight we came upon an ice cream parlour that we would stop at on our return after finding something to eat at our destination which in the end turned out to be only ten minutes away.
Just before we reached the tunnel we espied a restaurant called the WoolyKnit Café in an area called Upper Mill which after our investigation of the Tunnel which was closed today due to the winter months only opening on Monday, Wednesday and Friday’s until the Spring. This Tunnel is around five kilometres long and many travellers use their legs on the roof to speed up the journey which can take a couple of hours to traverse. The Tunnel is adjacent to the railway line and would have been an ideal trainspotting vantage point.
Feeling hungry by now we made our way back to the Woolyknit Café for a scrumptious meal which we all appreciated ranging from Baked Potatoes with a variety of fillings with Me and Malcolm going for the Cumberland sausage on brown bread with a fried egg, beans and tomatoes. We spent over an hour in this wonderful establishment and we left with only enough room for an ice cream at the parlour which was only ten minutes further back on our journey towards Greenfield. We all partook and mixed our flavours to suit our personalities.
We set of on our final hurdle to get back to Greenfield in time for the 15:20. We arrived in plenty of time to rest our weary legs before the train arrived. However, much to our consternation the train was in the end was twenty minutes late but with a plethora of trains back to Leeds we all caught the 16:13 Hull train. Colin departed the train a Dewsbury to walk down to the Bus Station which is only a minute’s walk away to catch the bus to Leeds.
The remainder of the lads staying on the train back to Leeds and making their separate way’s home with a trip to Liverpool to look forward to on Thursday 14 November 2017.
Another exceptionally good day out thanks to all the lads who made it so memorable!
