Scarborough

SCARBOROUGH TUESDAY 17 OCTOBER 2017
It was a reduced group of five that assembled in Leeds City Station for our trip to Scarborough meeting at the new seating area on PLATFORM 11 – 15 for the 09:12 to Scarborough via York, Malton and Seamer arriving in Scarborough at 10:44 some fifteen minutes late due to Ophelia we suspect. The Famous Five today consisted of Colin, Keith, Malcolm< Derek and John. Dave and Eddie unable to attend due to other commitments.
We set off for the North of Whitby and pass our eating establishment (North Bay Fisheries) where we will be having dinner in one hour’s time. We wander through Peasholm Park and then take the route past the miniature railway and up to the Sea Life Centre where John sees an opportunity to go scrambling up the hillside and mud to walk to Claughton. This idea is quickly and decisively beaten into submission and we continue with our planned walk back to North Bay Fisheries to enjoy a superb lunch before descending to Marine Drive and a leisurely stroll to The Harbour Bar and either a Knickerbocker Glory or a Peach Melba was consumed. Once again the Famous Five were unanimous in their appreciation of a wonderful ice cream resplendent with lots of lovely fruit.
After leaving The Harbour Bar we went in search of another Fish and Chip shop that had been recommended by a trawler man who was as enthusiastic about Princes Fish and Chip Shop as we had been about North Bay Fisheries. Although we were unable to sample the Fish Shop due to having no more room in our stomachs for anything else to eat we had located it for future reference. WE then made our way back to the Marina and continued in lovely sunshine as it had been all day with only a slight breeze from Ophelia. This time we journeyed to the South Bay and watched the tide come in with spectacular views across the bay. Malcolm, John and Keith travelled further on than either Derek or myself felt inclined to do so we waited for their return from the dead end and we all ascended to the main road and across suicide bridge to enjoy a red-hot drink in a converted tramway restaurant and it was fabulous as we sat overlooking Harry Gration’s favourite views and discussed further adventures to Greenfield and Standedge canal walk on Thursday 02 November at Keith’s recommendation. We then made our way back to the Station to catch the 16:50 back to Leeds, Derek remaining on board to alight at Dewsbury some ten minutes later for his bus home. A thoroughly enjoyable relaxing day with seven miles covered at an enjoyable pace but still sufficient to drain our resources.
