Newark-on-Trent

           21st. August 2018.                   Newark-on-Trent

Today our journey will take us south to the market town of Newark which stands by the river Trent.
Our means of getting there will be by train via Doncaster. We will eventually be a group of six, which will include John, Derek, Keith, Colin and Dave , we are to meet up with Jeff when we reach Newark. Our train drops us off a few minutes after eleven o’clock and there is Jeff to greet us.
From the station we take a steady walk towards the town centre, we are on the lookout for the newly located Civil War Museum.

. Not before too long we come across this building and decide to explore the artefacts that are on display here. What a treasuretrove of historical facts about this event in English history well worth the visit.

From here it was a rather hurried exit and down to the riverside
in order to board the MV. Sonning , which was due to sail at 1 o’clock  , this would take us along a short stretch of the Newark Dyke and finally along part of the river Trent as far as Farndon Marina .
First thing was to negotiate Lock 13 a rise and fall of about 4 feet. A few minutes later and we were on our way.

To be honest this part of our adventure was not too exciting at all , lacking in a captains commentary and points of interest etc. This experience lasted for about 90 minutes or so.
Back on the river bank the boat had moored in the shadow of the impressive Castle Ruins here at Newark. Now for something totally different in order to enjoy a well deserved lunch, the shortest bus ride ever , first on the 90 bus then off the 90 bus then board the 91 all at the same bus stop , this was in order to take us all to the Lord Ted a carvery pub which was situated a few miles out of town at Farndon .This turned out to be a failed experience, after the short bus ride we entered the pub only to find out that the carvery section had closed, what next, it was back to the bus stop and catch the 91 back to town, funny thing it was the same driver who had taken us to the Lord Ted. This return journey took longer than expected due to severe traffic problems, but the journey did throw up a lot of alternative places to get lunch, eventually we settled for Weatherspoons and finally after being reseated we enjoyed our rather late lunch, over which we could laugh at all our mishaps as we had time to spare before our return journeys home.
This trip to Newark will certainly be remembered if only for the mishaps!
Cheers Lads
