Eden Camp
13th. June 2019. Eden Camp Experience
For today’s adventure the lads are heading for East Yorkshire to experience what Eden Camp has to offer. This was a former P.O.W. Establishment which was built to house mainly Italian prisoners although some German where also interned there. The site is situated near the town of Malton, so the lads will take a train journey from Leeds then a short bus ride from the station at Malton to the Camp Site. A group of seven for today’s outing will include Derek Dave John Colin Keith and Eddie along with a guest appearance of John Howarth a former member of the Thackray workforce.
The lads have planned to catch the 9:21 train at Leeds then all going to plan hop on board the 10:15
Coastliner Bus which should drop them off just a short walk away from the Camp. This is indeed what happened.
The lads had come prepared for rather inclement weather according to forecast predictions but the rain held off and their experience began with a rather interesting meeting so to speak at the payment kiosk, ( photo explanation).
Introductions over, the lads continued with their visit trying to follow the intended route plan with some confusion at first, eventually getting to grips with the layout of the site.
The intended route was to explore a total of 29 huts , most containing information and artefacts from the Second World War, starting with the rise to fame of Hitler and his exploits and invasions of Europe, then on to Britain’s involvements and all that this entailed, some of the Huts including many displays of ever-day events that where apparent during these awful and traumatic times. Scenes from the incendiary bombing and the devastation that they could inflict on the homes of Britain then on to the evacuation of children away from these areas the issuing of gas masks the rationing of food and the hardships that this involved, many awful things being depicted.
Along side all of this was the story and the actions that the different forces had to take ,in order to Halt the progress of Hitlers regime , what brave and gallant lads and lasses, many of their stories on display here along with the medals that they had truly deserved. A great gratitude to all those heroes and the sacrifice they gave.
Plenty of photo opportunities occurring as we worked our way around this establishment and even time to enjoy a spot of lunch courtesy of the WinStan Cafe.
A few more huts to be explored then it was time to leave this memorable experience behind us and head back towards the bus stop and begin our journeys back home , not before taking in the delights of what a local Asda Store had to offer as we reach the town of Malton.
Twenty minutes later we were all aboard the 16:07 train heading back to Leeds.
A Truly unforgettable experience
Cheers Lads
