It was a mild morning as Brian, John and Colin assembled on Platform 15 for the Leeds to “Hull Paragon” six car combination with plenty of space and seats.
We would be alighting at Hull at 10:34 to change for the 10:53 to Hessle which is the nearest station to the Humber Bridge a journey of about seven minutes.
We then tried to reach the Humber Bridge which was to prove troublesome and extremely difficult.
The signage to the Bridge was non existent and we had to ask a number of people the way.
However, perseverance eventually paid off and we were soon climbing the steps at the start of the bridge.
The weather was now much warmer as we navigated the bridge in the direction of Barton on Humber with only the offside pathway in use and the views across the Humber most enchanting.
It would take just over an hour to cross the Bridge and the breeze kept us from overheating which was a blessing.
When we reached the other side we knew exactly where to go as a previous conversation with a Sheffield couple on the Bridge gave us a heads up that we could walk along the bank towards Barton on Humber and it wasn’t long before we espied our lunch stop.
Unfortunately, it was a disaster with cold hotdogs for Brian and John and a burnt roast potato for me although the cheese and bacon were edible.
Nevertheless, we didn’t let it spoil our day and we then walked to the bus terminal in Barton on Humber which was no more than a glorified bus stop.
The 350 bus arrived at 14:05 to take us back over the Humber Bridge and back to the Paragon Interchange in Hull where bus and train stations were integral with one another like all good cities should have.
We decided on a pork pie from Johnston’s of Hull also recommended by a couple of ladies on the bus and finding the shop we purchased our wares and sat on a bench in the sun to eat them with a million Pigeons for company.
John then wanted his ice cream fix so we went to Kaspas Ice cream parlour and ordered a couple of knickerbocker glories and chose to eat them outside Colin adding a strawberry milkshake to his order. Brian deciding not to partake.
With an hour before our 17:03 train back to Leeds we decided a short stroll would be in order and crossing the road higher up the high street we went in to a shopping centre where 95% of people had to our horror abandoned face coverings.
We then returned to the train station to catch our train which departed on time and would travel through Brough and Selby. However, on leaving Selby we came upon a points failure at Hambleton Junction which necessitated having to reverse all the way back to Selby to clear the line before the maintenance team from Network Rail would repair the points.
This threw the passengers into pandemonium with choices of returning to Hull to catch the 20:08 back to Leeds or waiting for the next train to York with the points failure being set to route all trains to York or waiting for the points to be fixed in time for the 18:48 to Halifax which was to go through Leeds.
Unbelievably the points were fixed in no time and we returned to Leeds on the 18:48 arriving back in Leeds at 19:25 around 80 minutes later than intended.
A good day full of excitement and delays but not enough to dampen our spirits.
