MIRFIELD – HUDDERSFIELD CANAL WALK RESUMATION 17 APRIL 2018

Today there would be five of us finishing the walk we had started on 27 November 2017. We were rained off on our last attempt but not to be conquered we decided to finish what we had started. John, Colin and Malcolm met on a cloudy but not too cold morning at Leeds City Station for the 09:36 to Manchester that would take us to Huddersfield. Derek catching it in Dewsbury and Keith travelling over by bus from Gildersome where we would all rendezvous at Huddersfield Bus Station in time to catch the 10:24 Leeds bus to Bradley where we all disembarked at the bus stop closest tour re-entry point to the canal.

As we began our walk we noticed that there were a number of industrial units interspersed with green open spaces for recreational activities. The walk itself was pleasant enough and the path almost dry for the entire stretch. We passed a number of training facilities on the left that could have belonged to Huddersfield Town football Club.
The walk started at 10:30 and by 12:10 we had left the canal behind to wend our way through the streets where Derek espied a map. Colin crossed the road to put his cartographical skills to good use and eventually all became clear as to not only where we were but exactly where we needed to go. The group for some reason were reluctant to cross the road to join Colin as though they felt they were already going in the right already but unfortunately, they were not

After reluctantly Crossing the road to join Colin they realised that in fact everything was hunky dory and that Colin had sussed the whole thing out and very shortly after a short walk down Queen Street we connected with King Street and on turning right we headed towards the Kingsgate Shopping Mall and the Lord Wilson Wetherspoons establishment being the last building on the left just before the entrance to the Mall.

Once inside we found ourselves a table and ordered our food! The noodles (Derek, John and Keith) chose noodles and the puddings (Colin and Malcolm) chose Steak and Kidney Puddings! We then discussed a number of likely trips that we might do in the future including The Royal Scot and a return to London for St. Pauls Cathedral and Westminster. John was tasked with organising the Royal Scot at Keighley and Worth Valley Railway on Tuesday 26 June at a cost of £20 each. Derek has added a little walk to this day out finishing of with Fish and Chips.

On leaving Wetherspoons we made our way up to Icetone Gelato for an ice cream Berry Berry and Knickerbocker Glory’s being the choices which we all agreed were not as good as the Harbour Bar but nevertheless were very nice.

We then made our way to Huddersfield Railway Station with Keith going back to the Bus Station. Unfortunately, a fiasco was unfolding on Platform 8 where a driver of the York train had pulled a SPAD (Signal Passed at Danger) that had caused him some anxiety and he had refused to take the train forward because of this. How it was resolved in the end was unclearhe was either convinced it wasn’t his fault or another driver was summoned which by this time I had lost the will to live. Eventually the York train pulled away allowing the 14:13 to Hull to enter the platform at 14:27 pulling away at 14:30. Dereand I left the train at Dewsbury to catch our respective buses home and John and Malcolm continued through to Leeds and another lovely day out was had by all.
