Leeds - Scarborough
It was an overcast day as Brian, John and myself rendezvoused at Leeds City Station on platform 15B for the 09:27 to Scarborough which was a direct service arriving in Scarborough just before 11:00.
On arrival we set off for North Bay Fisheries but sadly on our arrival it was not opening until 16:30 which was no good for three hungry individuals who had travelled over seventy miles for this treat.
However, after a brief discussion we decided to return to the Lookout on the pier which necessitated in walking the full marine Drive that was established in 1908.
We climbed up from the North Bay and down the path to the Marine Drive and bumped into Steve Cockerham and his wife and two friends so catching up on the past and after a ten minute chat we headed off for our dinner at the Lookout and wondered would it be open? Fortunately, it was and we ordered our meals which arrived reasonably quickly and we tucked in to satiate our hunger.
We then wandered over to the Harbour Bar which was open but not for sitting inside. Me and John ordered a cornet and strolled along the front with John buying Lesley some brandy snap, or else!
We crossed over the road and walked along the beach until we reached the Clock Café where I ordered a latte and a slice of coffee and walnut cake which I shared with my two erstwhile colleagues who decided not to buy anything. The views from our table were spectacular and we spent a good half hour relaxing and enjoying the panoramic views.
We then set off back to the station climbing from the café higher and higher passing the Indian Gardens where a house on the Main Street had a secret tunnel that ran underground to the beautifully maintained gardens which Brian knew all about.
We were now on the final stretch towards the Railway Station and Brian and John pointed out the many places they had both stayed at over the years. The views across the bay were equally spectacular from our vantage point and it was easy to see why our return to this seaside gem was so frequent.
On arrival at the station our train was already on the platform a class 68 “68030” “Black Douglas” which we hadn’t encountered before. Leaving bang on time at 16:34 and arriving in York at 17:24 in plenty of time for the 17:44 to Plymouth stopping in Leeds at 18:08.
Another great day out John marking it 11/10.
