Walton Walk.

9th.  June 2021.

Today it was a big hip hip hooray, for six of the Lads were to meet  up for a walk at last. Their intended walk would take them from Sandal/Agbrigg railway station to the nature park created on the site of the old colliery workings near  the village of Walton and then return to the railway station via a vist to the local pub, the New Inn for a lunch time meal. The distance of this walk could range from between 4 and 5 miles in total, all depends upon which footpath the Lads take, there are numerous ones on offer.

The Lads have planned to meet up at the Sandal/ Agbrigg railway station just a few minutes after 11am .John Colin and Brian are taking the train from Leeds, while Keith Derek and Dave will be arriving by car. From the station car park they will be following the trackside footpath that will take them in the direction of Walton , some 15 minutes later they came to the main road at which point they took a left turn and followed the road for about 100 yards then took the lane leading to the far end of the nature park, once inside the park they had a choice of pathways to follow, they decided to take the one that took them to the site of a monument erected in honour of a local councillor whose aim was to protect the local environment. Locally known as the Pyramids.

The woodland pathway took us partly along side of the old disused Barnsley Canal before branching off in a different direction, a few glimpses of wildlife were spotted at various locations on our journey as we now headed towards the other side of this park, it was quite a sunny and warm day so a few rest stops were in order to take on water so to speak. Some time later we eventually arrived at the visitors car park at which point we took the roadside path that took us into the village of Walton and onto the New Inn pub for a well earned rest and a lunch time meal. This proved a good choice and our meals went down a treat accompanied by a thirst quenching drink. About an hour later we left the pub and now headed back towards the trackside path and the return journey to the railway station. At this point we said our farewells to each other and agreed what a great day we all have had. Realising what had been missing from some of our lives due to this Corvid Pandemic.

Hopefully more days like this will come along soon.

Cheers Lads.
