Scarborough Trip

Leeds to Scarborough

It was an overcast morning as the triumvirate of John, Brian and Colin assembled at Leeds City station for our trip to Scarborough which unlike previous trips would require a change at York.

The train departing on time @ 09:14 arriving in York at 09:36 in plenty of time to catch the 10:00 to Scarborough already positioned on platform 2.

The train was extremely busy and unfortunately we had two individuals who didn’t have masks and one of them coughed like a dog barking.

Needless to say we decided to find a distant portion of the train and ended up in first class which was completely empty.  We stayed here until it got to Malton where we disembarked and got in the first three coaches which couldn’t be accessed  from inside the train and found a couple of tables where all the travellers were all thankfully wearing masks for the rest of the journey arriving in Scarborough at around 10:51 where Alan was waiting.

We then left the station and headed down towards peasholm Park and onto the Marine Drive. At this point Colin mentioned that he would like to visit the grave of Ann Brontë whose novel “The Tennant of Wildfell Hall” he had just read.

We then climbed up to the Castle Road which overlooks the Marine Drive and the North Sea. This road took us directly to the Church of St Mary’s where Ann’s grave is.

The church is beautiful but over the years has been reduced to over half its size.

We then descended down towards Marine Drive and sauntered down to the Lookout fish and chip restaurant for a delicious meal. However, Brian wasn’t too impressed with having to sit outside on the balcony overlooking the Harbour watching fishing boats and leisure boats cruising in and out.

Meal over we made our way outside to meet-up with Alan who had decided not to indulge.

Colin and John then went over to the Harbour Bar for an ice cream. Colin got his usual Knickerbocker Glory but as the restaurant was shut but doing takeaways. The Knickerbocker Glory he ordered was in a disposable plastic container and John got a whopping cornet so crossing back over the road we found refuge on a bench and devoured our choices in lovely sunshine.

Brian and Alan had taken off to look at Brian’s  residence for next Monday when Brian  returns for a four day stay next week.

John and Colin made their way up to rejoin them after catching the funicular railway to do so.

Meeting up again we said our farewells to Alan and then returned to the station via the Crescent to look at where Brian would be staying and it looked very impressive.

Arriving at the station in time for the 15:34 back to Leeds which was pushed by “Felix” 68031 once again arriving on time a little before 17:00. The return Journey had no such problems with practically an empty carriage.

We then returned to our various homes on the bus and John catching the 17:18 Skipton train to Bingley.

Another lovely day out and great to see Alan again after the Lockdown.
